Pike Research Senior Analyst Mackinnon Lawrence will be in attendance.
To schedule a meeting at this event, Please Contact Us.
Use Municipal Solid Waste to build, expand and diversify a profitable Anaerobic Digestion and Biogas Business
WHY is Anaerobic Digestion (AD) seen as such a key component of sustainable waste disposal in Europe and why is it spreading across the Atlantic the USA? Put simply - it works. This technology is nothing new but it's application has evolved into a solution for the modern age. AD promotes organics diversion from Landfill (which is in line with many municipality targets). It also encourages the re-use of previously discarded elements of the waste stream. And it does all of this whilst avoiding many of the emissions issues associated with waste treatments.
The North American market for Anaerobic Digestion (AD) and biogas production equipment is valued at $510 million in 2011 and is forecast to reach nearly $1.2 billion by 2016. A huge portion of this growth is set to come from the increasing versatility of Anaerobic Digestion as it expands beyond the agriculture market.
BUT there are challenges. A grasp of the significantly different business model and the need to understand the position of waste management stakeholders puts up barriers to this fledgling niche of the Biogas industry. Financing, Feedstock security, Long term agreements and dialogue with utilities concerning off take agreements are also pivotal issues as that can obstruct progress.
Thankfully, help is at hand in the form of the inaugural Anaerobic Digestion Conference and Expo.

Cyber Security Forum 2012
Monday, May 21st - Thursday, May 24th
This Cyber Security International Forum for Energy and Utilities was created to share firsthand knowledge and experience of international cyber security organizations who are leaders in the Middle East market, as well as to showcase the realism associated with (in) secure data and problematic issues associated control systems within energy and utilities companies.
Raising awareness about the necessity of securing data in these days of general internet accessibility is the hot topic of 21st century’s fast and mostly unpredictable technical development. The protection of critical national infrastructures has long been a serious concern to Governments in this region and is no longer limited to physical security.
Given the widespread use of interconnected networks and control systems in national oil, gas, power, water and electricity sectors, there is a very real need to enhance their cyber security given the ever increasing number of international attacks. It has been reported that there was more than a 40% increase across the Middle East in computers infected by malware in 2010.
The threat of such viruses was highlighted by the discovery that same year of the most sophisticated cyber-attack to date, Stuxnet. It was a vicious computer worm with highly specialized malware coded to target specific Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems and disrupt their operational activities but without the operators being aware of such changes.

The only Social Media in the Utilities Sector conference in the UK!
“57 million customers worldwide will use social media to engage utilities in 2011, a number that will rise to 624 million customers by the end of 2017” according to Pike Research.
As utility spending on social media increases and more people are going on-line, the utilities industry needs to keep ahead and not lag behind in their social media activities. With the industry usually in the spotlight and with all the media attention the industry gets, industry leaders are realizing that they need to engage with customers/media to improve their image.
As their customers become more tech-savvy, the best way to engage customers is through social media channels.
With other industries taking up the opportunities and challenges of social media, to a large extent the utilities industry is a long way behind. Industry leaders need to stay ahead by embracing social media to stay connected with their customers.

Smart Grid Cyber Security
Tuesday, May 22nd - Wednesday, May 23rd
Best Practices In Identifying Vulnerabilities And Implementing Holistic Security Strategies To Protect Critical Infrastructure And Consumer Data
Protecting critical national infrastructure from cyber attacks is top of the list of priorities for governments and utilities. Disablement of infrastructure and leakage of data are prime security concerns. However, according to industry analysts the challenges of protecting utility networks are vast and currently Europe’s utilities are not secure enough.
Securing aging legacy infrastructure that was not designed with today’s cyber security threats in mind is a huge challenge. Increased connectivity between traditionally standalone systems, added functionality and add-on security solutions all introduce new risks. Additionally, the rapid roll out of smart grids creates a host of new risks and exposes new network vulnerabilities that utilities aren’t prepared for and may not even know exist.
With so few security standards established, utilities are faced with radically overhauling their technical, organizational and cultural processes without benchmarks or guidelines to follow. Selecting the right combination of security measures to implement is a daunting task.
Smart Grid Cyber Security will bring together utilities, standardization bodies, cyber security technologists and regulators to discuss best practice guidance in network assurance, risk management and cyber security implementation.

World Smart Grid Conference India Week
Wednesday, September 12th - Friday, September 14th
Nowadays, “go green” has aroused heavy concerns that everyone expects reliable, affordable, and secure electricity in spite of where we locate, at any time of day. Accompanying with more and more renewable energies going on line such as solar and wind power, there would be a large challenge to support the power needs adequately. As a consequence, all policymakers are planning to update the integration of renewable sources into a much “smarter” grid in order to meet the high expectations of regulators and customers. Therefore, it is important to become an integrated part of The 2nd World Smart Grid Conference India Week which is an event for you to attain deep understandings on India’s smart grid initiatives, roadmap, regulatory environment, ongoing pilots of local utilities, network local and international smart grid industry executives and share insights on the future market developments.
India has the fifth largest electricity grid in the world and the world’s third largest transmission & distribution networks. Nevertheless, the supply cannot match the demand due to the increased economic activities and the rising living standard of population — furthermore, low metering efficiency, power theft, poorly planned distribution networks all decelerated the development of India power industry. Therefore, for this developing country, it is sustainable to perfect smart grid model which would be definitely beneficial for Indian residents.
Can you afford to be left out of the conversation? Attend The 2nd World Smart Grid Conference India Week from September 12-14, 2012 to hear a variety of stakeholders – electric utility companies, investors, tech developers, policymakers, government regulators and more – discuss best practices in accelerating the development of smart grid and strategies to make renewable integration and other business initiatives a success in the years to come.

The Conference will underscore the efforts made by car manufacturers, suppliers, electric utilities and governments to make electric transportation a reality. We will discuss technological breakthroughs, business perspectives and the priorities of this industry, which plays an essential role in sustainable development.
With our solid program offering and thanks to the unique charm of Montréal and Québec, we are confident that your participation to this conference will be worthwhile, both personally and professionally.
The Board of Directors of Electric Mobility Canada and its Chair, Mike Elwood, the organizing committee and all of our sponsors are proud to welcome you to Montréal!
