Carbon Management Software and Services Market to Grow More than Tenfold by 2017

January 5, 2009

Enterprise carbon management tools are now being adopted and implemented all over the world, as corporations grapple with ways to accurately measure and reduce their carbon footprints to meet targets set by their own corporate sustainability programs, industry initiatives, and government mandates.  According to a new report from Pike Research, the global market for carbon management software and services will expand from $384 million in 2009 to more than $4.3 billion by 2017, representing a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of more than 40%.

“Carbon accounting is a nascent and dynamic field,” says managing director Clint Wheelock.  “As such, the vendor landscape is very fragmented.  Young startups are competing against the many established firms in the market, as well as heavyweight software and IT services companies.”

Wheelock adds that carbon management companies to watch over the next few years include Hara, PE International, IHS, SAP, IBM, CA, SAS, Symantec, Deloitte, PwC, and Accenture.  Competition is also emerging from corporations themselves, as a few of them have decided to provide their homegrown tools for free or at low cost to their customers.

Western Europe is currently the largest regional market for carbon management software and services, but Pike Research forecasts that North America will become the new leader by 2013.  Over the coming years, these two regions together will represent approximately 80% of the global carbon management industry.

Pike Research’s study, “Carbon Management Software and Services”, examines global and regional carbon management trends, and forecasts market growth by region and industry vertical through 2017.  The report assesses the competitive landscape, including SWOT analysis of major software and service vendors, and provides insights on the carbon management initiatives of large enterprise end-users.  An Executive Summary of the report is available for free download on the firm’s website.
