Meter Data Management

Software and Managed Services for Data VEE, Data Receipt, Utility
Optimization, Smart Grid Optimization, Grid Efficiency, AMI Management, Aggregation, and System of Record Applications

Meter data management (MDM) systems are at an inflection point. Historically, MDM systems collected meter reading data from advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) and automated meter reading (AMR) systems to create accurate bills with little manual intervention. Now, MDM systems have emerged as centerpiece of the AMI environment, a key component of the Smart Grid. Utilities expect MDM to enable more efficient grid operations. Where IT departments have traditionally driven MDM deployments, Operations requirements and customer engagement now predominate in RFPs.

To address this evolving opportunity, vendors with experience in operations or customer care are now entering the MDM market. The new requirements are radically different from traditional MDM and require radically different approaches to building and delivering MDM. Leading MDM vendors are moving quickly to respond. Pike Research segments MDM into two sets of applications, Base and Extended. Our analysis indicates that the Base Applications will be a minimum requirement for any credible MDM market player, but MDM vendors will make their money on Extended Applications. MDM Managed Services are also expected to arrive in the future, but to date have achieved little or no adoption. We believe that this has to do with the size of utilities that have purchased MDM so far, and those that will purchase MDM in the future for the first time.

This Pike Research report analyzes the evolving market for MDM systems, including an assessment of 24 different MDM application areas and three tiers of service. The study examines the state of the market, discusses business cases and criteria for utility decision-making, and identifies technology issues faced by the industry. Detailed profiles are provided for key industry players, along with granular market forecasts, segmented by service tier and world region, extending through 2018.
