Distributed Generation

The Alternative Business Model

The concept of a smart grid is predicated on the idea of two-way communications and bi-directional power flows. Central to this vision of a more resilient, diverse and secure power grid are various forms of distribution generation (DG.) These resources, whether powered by renewable fuels (solar or wind), biogas or fossil fuels, offer efficiency, reliability and security benefits.

Adding to the effectiveness and appeal of DG are microgrids, or pockets of distributed energy resources that can be isolated from the utility power grid. Along with aggregation and optimization platforms such as “virtual power plants,” these new distribution networks will help make DG work for end-use customers, utilities and grid operators.

The entire family of DG options is moving from hype to reality, as all pieces of the technology puzzle required to roll out reliable, revenue generating, market acceptable distributed generation facilities are put together. Declining costs for solar PV and small wind is just one positive trend. Fuel cells, micro-gas turbines and super-efficient combined heat & power (CHP) systems not only offer efficiency benefits, but also look increasingly attractive from a cost standpoint due to record low natural gas prices. Related distributed energy resources such as advanced storage and demand response round out the picture.

This webinar sets the proper context for today’s greater reliance upon different types of distributed generation, examines the fuels being tapped, and outlines the business models and what to expect in the future.
